Eugene I-Peng Tang (湯翊芃), is a Taiwanese artist based in Chicago. He explores intimate encounters and unconventional relationships that meld personal life experiences with those of his subjects. Through navigating the perception of his "seemingly" youthful Asian body, and his body in relation to others, his work offers insight into an experience of alienation within the gay community in the West. Tang emphasizes the dynamic nature of the art-making process, integrating performance into his photography and video installations. Influenced by his background in anthropology and his experience as a filmmaker, his collaborative works draw from relational aesthetics and queer studies, seamlessly intertwining these theoretical frameworks with personal experiences and desires. This creates a deeply intimate and participatory approach to his art.
Tang's work has been exhibited extensively, both locally and internationally. His pieces have been showcased at venues such as LATITUDE, Filter Photo, EXPO Chicago, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, Co-Prosperity, the Chicago Art Department, and collected by the Art Institute of Chicago and Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection. His art has gained international recognition with exhibitions at Abteilung Für Alles Andere in Berlin, Germany, 破土 New Bloom in Taipei, Taiwan, and Book2hand 附近書店 in Kunming, China.
Tang's accolades include the National Fund(GSSA) awarded by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education (2023-2024), residencies at the Institut Für Alles Mögliche in Berlin(2023) and Ox-Bow School of Art(2024), Jim Zanzi Scholarship (2022), and the Daniel Berger & Barbara DeGenevieve Graduate Merit Scholarship (2021). He has also been honored with the Vicinity Juror’s 1st Award at Perspective Gallery(2023) and the SAIC Student Leadership Award (2021-2023). Additionally, Tang co-authored the book ‘Grandma's Girlfriends - the Splendid Youth of Elder Lesbians’ (阿媽的女朋友:彩虹熟女的多彩青春), which was awarded 'Best Daily Book of the Year' at the Openbook Award Taiwan (2020).
